Massachusetts motorists will soon be able to pay tribute to fallen law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty under recently passed legislation establishing new motor vehicle license plates. Governor Maura Healey signed the bill into law on July 15, 2026.

The state currently offers license plates honoring Fallen Heroes and Firefighters, as well as plates supporting various causes and the region's professional sports teams. The most recent special plate addition was the popular blue MA 250 license plates.

The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles website details which special plates are available and how to obtain them.

Springfield's WWLP-TV 22 reported, "The bill, designated S.2903 - An Act Honoring Blue Star Families, directs the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) to develop these new plates," as well as motorcycle emblems.

"The initiative aims to provide a visible symbol of respect for their surviving spouses, parents, and children," according to the station.

Who Is Eligible for the Free Special Plates?

Governor Healey and Lawmakers React to the New Bill

Upon signing the bill into law, Healey, who testified in favor of the bill, issued a statement.

"Every day, police officers put on the badge knowing the risks that come with serving their communities," she said. "Their families understand those risks, too."

"Creating a new license plate is a small gesture from the people of Massachusetts that means so much to Blue Star Families," Healey said.

How to Apply for the New Blue Star Plates

The Registry of Motor Vehicles will begin implementing the new license plate program and will announce application information once it becomes available.
