People are still leaving Massachusetts for greener pastures in other states where housing, energy, and most everything else costs less, and there are fewer government regulations to contend with. However, according to a January 2025 Boston Globe piece, "the exodus is slowing down."

The Globe reported, "We were losing around 1,100 people a week to other states during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now that's been cut in half to pre-pandemic levels."

A federal migration report from the U.S. Census Bureau indicated that Massachusetts lost 119,100 residents between June 2021 and December 2024.

The Massachusetts population "grew in the 2023 -2024 period at the fastest pace in more than a decade, thanks to an influx of international immigrants," according to the Globe.

A new report from the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation (MTF), "We Are ALX, and the Mauricio Gaston Institute for Latino Community Development & Public Policy," says that about eight in 10 new Massachusetts residents are Hispanic or Latino, quickly increasing their share of the Commonwealth's population.

The Latino Newsletter reported that "Latinos are driving Massachusetts' economy."

The report stated Latinos in Massachusetts contributed $30 billion to the state's economic growth from 2014 to 2023. The Newsletter stated the report noted that "the number of Latinos in the Massachusetts workforce grew by 49% during that same time frame, resulting in an increase of more than 148,000 workers and outpacing the state's overall job growth rate by seven times."

State House News Service reported that MTF policy researcher Pablo Suarez believes there are still challenges for Hispanic and Latino communities in Massachusetts.

"Closing gaps in education, workforce training, and wealth is an economic necessity in Massachusetts' competitiveness," Suarez said.
