WARWICK, RI - The Westport man accused of stabbing an employee at a Warwick Rite-Aid confessed in court and will undergo a mental health evaluation.

41-year-old Jacob Gallant appeared in Kent County Court Wednesday to rescind the order for a competency hearing, with the judge asking Gallant if he knew why he was in court. Gallant responded, "I am here because I attacked a young woman the other day." The judge deemed Gallant competent and ordered a mental health evaluation.

Gallant is charged with assault with intent to murder, which carries the possibility of a 20 year sentence with a conviction. Bail is set at $100,000. If Gallant posts $10,000 of the bail, he will be released and ordered to stay away from the victim.

Gallant's attorney says if he is released on bail, Gallant will be staying with a cousin in Rehoboth.
