It usually takes a year or two to plan and save up for a wedding, so a year and a half engagement makes sense to me.

Someone at the office told me that wasn't enough time to be engaged. His point was that a couple shouldn't start planning a wedding right away. He thinks they should take up to a year just being happily engaged before even setting a date.

While I am all for enjoying that special time with your new fiancé, I think waiting a year to set a date may be pushing it. Take a month or two. Be crazy in love. Start doing everything with your left hand as an excuse to show off the ring. Survey the financial situation and decide what’s best for you. Just don’t take longer than 3 years total, because people will wonder if you’re ever actually going to tie the knot.
