NEW BEDFORD - Police say speed was definitely a factor in an early morning car crash in New Bedford's South End Sunday.

The accident took place around 2 A.M. Sunday when a car heading north on Brock Avenue hit a parked car at 766 Brock Ave and then struck a tree near 790 Brock Ave. A street sign, a fence, and some bushes were also damaged during the crash.

Both the driver and passenger were extricated from the vehicle by New Bedford firefighters. The driver, a 31-year-old New Bedford woman, and the passenger, a 33-year-old North Easton woman, were both taken to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries.

The accident is under investigation.

Police say charges against the driver are more than likely.
