UPDATE (11 A.M.) — New Bedford Fire Chief Michael Gomes says the ammonia leak at Bridge Terminal, Inc., has been contained.

The leak originated from the building's ammonia refrigeration system.

Chief Gomes says the building is being ventilated and should be safe for workers to re-enter shortly after noon.

Gomes confirmed there were no injuries as a result of the leak.

ORIGINAL STORY (9:30 A.M.) —

NEW BEDFORD — Massachusetts Hazmat crews, along with New Bedford Police and Fire Departments, are responding to a hazardous materials situation along New Bedford's waterfront.

The emergency response teams were called to the Bridge Terminal Inc. building at 12 Fish Island, just west of the New Bedford/Fairhaven Bridge just after 7 a.m. on Tuesday. Workers in the building and around the area reported a strong smell of ammonia. Workers in the building quickly evacuated.

Police on scene have confirmed to WBSM News that the situation is a Tier II hazardous materials emergency involving an ammonia leak from within the building.

Hazmat crews at the scene are working to identify the source of the leak and contain it.

No injuries have been reported.
