Attention all student-athletes at Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational-Technical  High School: a $1,000 scholarship is now available through the Mark J. Fitzsimmons Memorial Scholarship Fund for students who have played at least one year of varsity sports and maintained a 2.0 Grade-Point Average or better.

Deadline for applications is June 14.

Mark Fitzsimmons was a revered lacrosse coach at GNB Voc-Tech for many years. He taught his players to always compete, obey the rules, and never give up.

Coach Fitzsimmons died from cancer several years ago, and a short time later a group of former students began meeting about ways to honor their coach.

GNB Voc-Tech grads Sean Carney and Greg Desrosiers said "Fitzy" provided them with life lessons that are still helping them today. They joined with former players to form the Mark J. Fitzsimmons Scholarship Fund and began raising money.

Their fundraising has been hampered by COVID-19, but the group is determined to continue to award scholarships now and in years to come.

Sean and Greg joined Townsquare Sunday to discuss their former coach, the scholarship program, and their plans for the future. Their interview can be heard here:
