I had to bring my dog, Bo, in for his checkup at the vet the other day. I love our veterinarian. Vets are the most patient people in the world.

In the course of the checkup, the vet noticed my dog had some junk in his ears. They went and cleaned it out and determined that it was yeast. Not a big deal. Everything is going to be OK. I just have to give him some medicine at home.

Easier said than done.

The office gave me two bottles of pills. Bo has to take the pills twice a day, and I need to spray some liquid into each of his ears twice a day.

I made Bo a peanut butter sandwich, quartered it up, and tucked the pills into each mini sandwich. I must have the smartest dog in the world because even though he normally wolfs down peanut butter sandwiches, somehow he knew there was funny business with this one. He kept turning away his face from the food. This is from a dog who's never turned down a meal.

I finally tricked him iby ditching the bread and just hiding the pill in a glob of peanut butter. That was the easy part.

Now, I had to squirt the liquid in each ear. The first night was a shock and awe campaign, and Bo didn't see it coming. The next morning he was ready.  As soon as he saw me with the bottle, he took off. He wouldn't let me get near him, and when I finally did he was whimpering and crying.  He broke my heart.

I feel like now when he sees me he is thinking of me as the mean squirt-bottle guy instead of the fun guy.  I feel like it's even worse than kids.  At least with kids, you can try to explain to them that this is for their own good and I'm doing this because I love them.

I feel like my dog thinks I'm suddenly his bully.
