NEW BEDFORD - New Bedford Police say the 60-year-old victim in Monday afternoon's shooting in the North End was in his apartment at 50 Tallman Street when he was shot.

According to police, two separate groups of individuals began exchanging gunfire in the area of 329 North Front Street Monday afternoon. Neighbors say the shooting began on Nye Street, with both groups then proceeding to North Front Street, continuing to fire at each other there.

A stray bullet from the gunfire entered the home of the 60-year-old male victim, striking him in the neck. The unidentified man was transported to Rhode Island Hospital. Police say he has since been released.

New Bedford Police believe the shooting between the two groups was gang related, but have not yet verified that suspicion.

Police add that reports of a young girl being shot or grazed by a bullet during the incident are false. Police have not received any other reports of injuries as a result of the Monday afternoon shooting.

Detectives are following up on multiple leads and are asking anyone with additional information to contact them at 508-992-7463, or email tip@newbedfordpd.com.

Police have increased patrols and presence in the Tallman/North Front Street area.
