HARTFORD, CT — A 17-year-old former New Bedford resident faces a murder charge after police say he stabbed his older brother to death.

NBC Connecticut is reporting the stabbing, which occurred at 2006 Main Street in Hartford, has been called a "domestic violence homicide" by Hartford Police. The family had just moved to Hartford from New Bedford last week.

Police say the two brothers got into an argument inside their apartment at approximately 1 a.m. Saturday. Eventually, the argument spilled out onto the sidewalk, where the 17-year-old allegedly stabbed his 21-year-old brother--identified as Jiram Ortiz--in the heart with a four-inch steak knife.

Hartford Police referred to as a "heat of the moment type thing," noting that the younger brother tried to help Ortiz once he realized what he had done, and that he is cooperating with police.

Ortiz was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital a short time later.
