We're not even two months into 2025, and the SouthCoast is already seeing several closures, from small mom-and-pop shops to larger businesses.

As the landscape of local commerce evolves, some businesses are making tough decisions while others adapt to new opportunities.

In Fairhaven, the Walgreens at 85 Huttleston Ave will officially close its doors on March 19 as part of a larger company-wide downsizing effort. That's not to be confused with the 220 Huttleston Ave location that shares a parking lot with Frontera Grill.

Rewards members were recently notified via email, with Walgreens acknowledging the inconvenience: “We’re sorry for any disruption this may cause, and we’re here to help at our nearby locations and online.”

Walgreens’ media relations team confirmed the closure, citing financial pressures.

*Our retail pharmacy business is central to our go-forward business strategy. However, increased regulatory and reimbursement pressures are weighing on our ability to cover costs. It is never an easy decision to close a store, but when necessary, we work to minimize disruptions and redeploy most of our affected employees," Walgreens Senior Specialist Jennifer Cotto stated.

The company previously announced plans to close 1,200 stores nationwide as part of a turnaround strategy.

For Fairhaven customers, Walgreens will automatically transfer prescriptions from the closing location to the Walgreens at 220 Huttleston Ave. Additionally, those who fill prescriptions at both locations can receive free delivery for 90 days. Patients are encouraged to speak with their pharmacist to set up the service.

As for the employees at the closing location, they have been offered transfers to keep their jobs. In the meantime, the store remains open to the public, with shelves still fully stocked as it prepares for its final weeks in business.
