Fairhaven Unattended Fire Pit Causes Extensive Damage to Home, Shed
FAIRHAVEN (WBSM) — An unattended fire pit led to extensive damage to a Fairhaven home this afternoon.
At about 12:14 p.m. today, it was reported that heavy black smoke could be seen from Sconticut Neck Road.
Firefighters responded to the scene at 115 Ebony Street and received additional information that an unattached shed was fully involved in fire and that the fire was extending toward the house.
Fire Chief Todd Correia arrived on the scene along with the deputy chief, acting captain, Engine 2, Engine 4 and Ladder 1.
They arrived to find that the fire had spread across the property to include a shed filled with lawn equipment, a 20-pound propane tank, the attached deck, and the north side of the residence.
The single occupant of the home had already exited the residence and was uninjured, the fire department said. Firefighters also located an uninjured cat and were able to get him into the care of Animal Control.
Acushnet EMS, a Mattapoisett fire engine and a New Bedford fire engine all provided mutual aid. The Acushnet Fire Department provided station coverage during the incident.
The fire department said it was determined that a fire in an outside fire pit several feet from the house was the cause. The department said fire damage to the house is “significant” and that the “cost is unknown at this time.”
“Fire Chief Todd Correia would like to reiterate the previous order under the authority of the State Fire Marshal, that no outdoor fires are permitted at this time,” Public Information Officer Maggie Rocha said in a release.
