After 20 years of being the calm, steady voice on the other end of the line, Fairhaven Police dispatcher Marie Silveira officially signed off today for the final time – and the sendoff couldn’t have been more heartfelt.

Marie’s last shift took place this morning from 8 a.m. to noon, quietly closing a chapter that has meant so much to the town she’s always called home. Word of her retirement reached The MGM Show just minutes after she started her final shift, and naturally, we couldn’t let the moment pass without a little Fun 107-style surprise.

So yes, we prank-called the Fairhaven Police Department – all in the name of celebration.

When Silveira answered, she was immediately greeted with congratulations from the morning crew, thanking her for two decades of dedication to Fairhaven, and for being one of the unsung heroes of public safety.

A Career Full of Unforgettable Calls

When asked about the craziest call she ever handled, Silveira didn’t hesitate. One moment stood out above the rest: a man who walked into the station lobby after accidentally cutting off his finger while doing yard work.

In a moment that perfectly sums up her quick thinking and composure, Silveira recalled grabbing a bag of ice, thanks to her late father, who had just brought it in for her water. She then placed the finger inside, and helping save it.

It’s the kind of story that reminds you dispatchers aren’t just answering phones. They’re making split-second decisions that truly change lives.

The Calm Voice When It Matters Most

Over the years, Silveira has heard it all – panic, fear, heartbreak, and urgency – yet she explained her approach in the simplest, most powerful way.

“You just do it,” she said. “You just move on to the next call.”

That steady mindset is exactly why dispatchers like Silveira are so essential. They’re often the first voice someone hears in their worst moment, offering reassurance and guidance when it’s needed most.

A Full-Circle Farewell in Her Hometown

For Silveira, serving Fairhaven wasn’t just a job. It was personal. A Fairhaven High School graduate, Class of 1977, she grew up in town and spent her career serving neighbors, friends, and familiar streets.

Her husband also dedicated decades to public service, retiring after 35 years as a Fairhaven fire lieutenant. Now the two are finally ready to enjoy the kind of trip they put off for years: a well-earned vacation to Hawaii.

As for her final shift, Silveira’s wish was simple and perfectly on brand.

“I want a good shift. I want everyone to go home happy and healthy, as always," she said.

Thank You, Marie

On behalf of Fairhaven, and everyone who’s ever needed help in a moment of fear or uncertainty, thank you, Marie Silveira.

Thank you for the calm voice. Thank you for the steady presence. Thank you for 20 years of service to the town you love.

Enjoy retirement. You’ve earned every second of it.
