Fairhaven Jesus Returns to the SouthCoast After 5-Year Absence
It was a special morning on The MGM Show as Michael, myself and Michaela welcomed a familiar face back into the studio: the one and only "Fairhaven Jesus."
After a five-year absence from the SouthCoast, Malvin "Mel" Larson returned home, robe and all, with the same humble mission he’s had for years: to walk the streets, connect with people and share a message of love.
You’ve likely seen him with his long hair, flowing robe and kind smile walking around Fairhaven or downtown New Bedford. While some locals know him well, others are just now meeting Fairhaven Jesus for the first time.
No Robe, No Problem
“I’ve actually met some youngsters riding bikes and had to explain who I was,” he laughed. “I didn’t have my robe at first because I had to ship it up from Florida after it was a week late."

Life in a Storage Unit
For the last 45 years, Larson has lived in Fort Myers, Florida, returning to Fairhaven every summer. For the past five of those years, however, he’s been living unconventionally in a storage unit that doubles as his home and workshop.
“It’s 15 feet wide, 20 feet deep. No AC, but it has a toilet and a sink. It was once an office. And you know what? I’ve never been happier,” he said. “God humbled me, and I’m grateful.”

A Promise to Help Others
So why did he stay away for five years? Larson explained he remained in Florida to care for an elderly couple who owned the warehouse where he lives, one of whom has been dealing with serious health issues.
“I’ve been helping them. They gave me a roof, and I felt like I needed to be there,” he shared.

Home for a Special Reason
Now he’s back, and just in time to celebrate his mother Janice’s 92nd birthday and reconnect with the community.
A Mission Years in the Making
Fairhaven Jesus first began donning his now-signature robe about 14 years ago, though he said he’s felt a spiritual calling since he was just five years old. His presence isn’t about religion, but about inspiration.
“Some people might not understand or may get offended, but I talk to people to try and help them,” he said. “You might be doing something that’s harming you, and I just want to help improve your life.”
A Message of Love
As for his haters?
“I love you,” he said simply. “I really do.”
Fairhaven Jesus plans to stay local this summer, mostly within walking distance around Fairhaven and New Bedford, but said if you see him out and about, don’t be shy.
“Please come and talk to me,” he said. “That’s what I’m here for.”
