Elderly Driving School Passenger Killed in Mansfield Crash

MANSFIELD — The man killed in a crash near Mansfield High School involving a driving school vehicle on Saturday has been identified as 80-year-old John Masciarelli.

The Bristol County District Attorney's Office said Masciarelli was the rear seat passenger of a Toyota Corolla from Teachers Driving Academy that was involved in a crash with a Ford Explorer on Saturday morning.

Masciarelli appeared to suffer a medical episode just after the collision at around 8:30 a.m. on East Street, the access road to Mansfield High School, according to the D.A.'s office.

Mansfield police and emergency medical services responded to the crash, finding the two damaged vehicles and Masciarelli in the back seat.

He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, where he was pronounced dead after live-saving measures by hospital staff failed.

Both the permitted student driver and the road test agent for the Registry of Motor Vehicles, who was in the front passenger seat, were also taken to Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment of minor injuries and observation.

The Ford Explorer driver was taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, the D.A.'s office stated.

State and Mansfield police are actively investigating the crash.
