Easton Man Sentenced for Vehicular Homicide in 80 MPH Crash

FALL RIVER — An Easton man will spend two to three years in state prison and got his driver's license revoked after he killed a man in an April 2020 crash in which he was speeding on Xanax.

The Bristol County D.A.'s office said 28-year-old Jake McCabe pleaded guilty in Fall River Superior Court earlier this month to reckless operation resulting in vehicular homicide.

At the time, McCabe was using Xanax and other medication and police found his phone running a YouTube video in the head-on collision that killed 37-year-old Easton man Scott Lewis, WBSM previously reported.

McCabe was also going more than twice the posted speed limit, the D.A.'s office said.

His driver’s license has been revoked for the next 15 years.

The D.A.'s office said McCabe was driving a white Cadillac Escalade on Bay Road in Easton on April 26, 2020 when he ran into Lewis' Kia Rio, which suffered catastrophic damage.

Lewis was killed and his body was trapped inside the car, requiring the jaws of life to get him out.

He was the sole occupant of the car.

Although McCabe originally told police that both vehicles veered into each other, several witnesses said — and a Ring doorbell video showed — the Cadillac SUV was driving at excessive speeds just before the crash.

An investigation showed McCabe was driving 80 miles per hour just before the crash, braking to 61 mph at the time of the collision — but the speed limit on the road is 30 mph.

"The defendant was clearly operating his motor vehicle in a reckless manner, which caused the death of the victim," Bristol District Attorney Thomas Quinn said.

"This was a terrible loss for the victim’s family and my heart goes out to them," he added. "I’m glad the defendant accepted responsibility for his actions."
