NEW BEDFORD - The company that plans to build wind turbines off Martha's Vineyard is proposing a name change.

DONG Energy, which stands for Danish Oil and Natural Gas, is seeking to change it's name to Ørsted.

Thomas Thune Andersen, Chairman of the Board of Directors for DONG says in a press release, "With our profound strategic transformation and the divestment of our upstream oil and gas business, this is no longer who we are."

DONG has stopped all use of coal in their energy production, and is continually reducing it's reliance on natural gas.

The new name, Ørsted, pays homage to Danish scientist Hans Christian Ørsted, who in 1820 discovered electromagnetism, a key component in wind turbines.

The name change proposal will be voted on in what DONG calls an Extraordinary General Meeting on October 30.
