Imagine heading out for your morning commute to work or school, driving into a fairly quiet Ted Williams Tunnel then suddenly seeing a dog walking towards you.

That is exactly what happened to drivers in Boston last Thursday morning when a dog somehow got loose in the tunnel and had to be rescued by Massachusetts State Police.

Concern for the pup popped up online all weekend long, now we know what happened to it after the amazing rescue caught on camera.

Ted Williams Tunnel's Thursday Morning Traffic Alert

It might just be the craziest reason to be stuck in traffic inside the 1.6-mile tunnel: a dog wandering the side of the highway.

Yet, as you can see from this video from Mass DOT, that is exactly what happened.

Luckily as the black-and-white dog first enters the tunnel, traffic is pretty light. The few drivers who pass the dog manage to avoid it completely.

Those drivers must have alerted state police however, because eventually traffic was stopped in an effort to retrieve the dog. Though it took a few tries, an officer does manage to get the dog into his cruiser and off the road.

How Did a Dog Get in the Ted Williams Tunnel?

Although Massachusetts State Police have yet to release any information as to how the dog got into the tunnel to begin with, if you watch the video closely, there appears to be a person with a dark colored top on the road at the far end of the tunnel.

My guess would be the dog somehow got away from this person and they were trying desperately to get their dog to come back without getting themselves injured in the process.

There were some reports of this same dog wandering in a parking lot at Boston Logan International Airport.

Where is the Dog Now?

Luckily no one was injured in this animal rescue from the East Boston side of the tunnel. State police took the dog to Boston Animal Care and Control, where it was later reunited with its owner.

The owner's identity and how the dog got loose remain unknown. There has been no official statement from Massachusetts State Police on the incident at the time of this story.
