South Dartmouth Surprise at the DeMello School

There was pure joy inside the Joseph DeMello Elementary School this week when fourth-grade teacher Mrs. Lindsey Rafferty was surprised with Fun 107’s Teacher of the Month award.

Who Nominated Mrs. Rafferty and Why It Mattered

Submitted by Tara DeMello, the nomination praised Rafferty’s classroom as “a place of genuine warmth, support, and care,” led by a deeply kind, patient educator who tailors instruction, builds meaningful relationships, and communicates clearly with families.

Community Partners Help Celebrate SouthCoast Educators

The celebration was a community effort. Vermette Development’s Dave Vermette joined the surprise; he also built the DeMello School’s basketball courts. Vermette stepped up to provide a BJ’s membership, a $200 BJ’s gift card, and a big-screen smart TV to Mrs. Rafferty, which students immediately lobbied to keep for a “movie day.”

From DeMello Fourth Grader to DeMello Fourth-Grade Teacher

As we met Mrs. Rafferty, we realized that she had once sat in that very classroom as a DeMello fourth grader. She credited former teacher Mrs. Helen Mello for inspiring her career. Years ago, Rafferty even nominated colleague Christine Cavallo at the Sylvia School for the same honor, proof she knows the power of recognition. There seems to be quite a bit of teaching talent at the small Dartmouth school, as DeMello’s principal is also a past Fun 107 Teacher of the Month.

Why Mrs. Rafferty Stands Out in the Classroom

Currently on a one-year contract, Rafferty hopes to stay “for the long haul.” The connection in her room was unmistakable as kids cheered and chanted “bring her back,” with smiles everywhere.

SouthCoast School Districts with the Best Teachers

There are a lot of amazing teachers on the SouthCoast and as parents we appreciate them all. Yet one site asked students who they felt had the best teachers around and the results may surprise you.
