The Massachusetts Design, Art, and Technology Institute (DATMA) has been working in New Bedford for almost five years, creating public art and encouraging other artists to show their imagination and talent.

DATMA has also brought artists from other parts of the world to New Bedford to display their creations.

DATMA has also worked with UMass Dartmouth and in area schools, encouraging children to create art in different ways.

It has been a remarkable partnership with the existing arts community in New Bedford. Now DATMA is taking its commitment a step further, issuing a national call for artists to create an outdoor piece of art with the theme of "Shelter."

DATMA Executive Director Lindsay Miś visited Townsquare Sunday this week to discuss her agency's work in New Bedford, plus the new public art project, which is now in its beginning stages.

"At this point, we just want to see what people can do, what kind of artist are they, and why do they want to make a piece of public art with us," Miś said.

Miś calls it a "great opportunity for someone who is emerging into the public art scene, or makes artwork but has never put it into public spaces before."

The artist selected will receive a $25,000 stipend and will work with DATMA on the process of putting art in a public space.

Miś added that while DATMA has issued a national call for artists, SouthCoast artists will get special consideration. The deadline for artists to submit their portfolio is November 1.
