Massachusetts Sees Second Whale Stranding in January as Sperm Whale Washes Ashore on Cuttyhunk
Just 26 days after a deceased humpback whale was discovered in Westport, Massachusetts, tragedy has struck again.
On January 26, a sperm whale was found washed ashore on the rocky coastline of Cuttyhunk Island along Gosnold County Road.
The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), known for their involvement in such cases, has been contacted for further information. Updates will follow as more details become available.
Mattapoisett resident Manny Capriotti documented the scene in a video that quickly gained attention online titled "Sad day on Cuttyhunk":
Again, while the visuals speak volumes, no official information about the incident has been released.
Martha E. Meacham, Communications Supervisor for the Greater Atlantic Regional Fisheries Office (GARFO) and NOAA Fisheries, responded to an inquiry by stating, “At this time, NOAA GARFO does not have a statement to offer on this case.”
Sadly, in light of the recent beaching, people are sharing Capriotti's video and blaming the whale's death on wind turbines, similar to what former President Donald Trump said just days earlier during his inauguration parade, where he stated, “If you’re into whales, you don’t want windmills, either.”
Massachusetts has seen a concerning trend in whale mortalities in recent years, with nearly 50 humpback whale deaths reported since 2016 as part of an Unusual Mortality Event (UME). While humpback whales dominate these statistics, the recent discovery of the sperm whale serves as a reminder of the challenges marine life face along the Atlantic coast.
For now, the Cuttyhunk community awaits answers as experts work to investigate the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking event.
