A child was rescued from a hot car in a store parking lot.

New Bedford Police Lt. Amos Melo tells WBSM News that around 10:44 a.m. Monday a shopper at Saver's Thrift Shop in the North End heard a child screaming and spotted a 1 1/2 -year-old child locked in the car, with the window open about an inch.

Melo says witnesses were able to get the door open and get the child out.

The witnesses then called 911 and were advised to take the child into the air conditioned store.

The child was taken to St. Luke's Hospital and is expected to be ok.

Melo says the child was being watched by the grandfather, who became distracted while talking to another person, and forgot the child was in the car.

The Department of Children and Families was notified, and a 51a filed, but Melo says it is unlikely that charges will be filed at this time.
