You May Soon Run a Race on Boston Logan’s Runway
Some runners may be excited to hear that their next race could take place right at Boston Logan International Airport using the actual taxiways and runways as the course.
The idea was originally presented back in early 2020 and was sidelined because of the pandemic, but avid runner Dave McGillivray of North Andover has told us discussions are back on with Massport, the company that manages Boston Logan.
Where the Idea for the Runway Race Came From
The idea was brought to Massport by a medical transportation company called Angel Flight out of Lawrence, which is a nonprofit organization providing much-needed emergency medical transportation for patients needing to travel for medical assistance.
A footrace on a runway isn't a new idea. Several airports across the country have been taking part in these, including the Beverly Regional Airport's Fly by 5K.

How Security and Logistics Will Work
I had so many questions as to how something like this is logistically possible. Anyone can sign up to run, but sine the race takes place on active runways, all participants will be required to go through security screening.
Right now, McGillivray and crew are just waiting on final permission from Massport and hope to have online registration open before the end of the year, with the race taking place in May of 2026. The race proceeds will benefit several nonprofits that are yet to be announced.
Will This Affect Flights at Boston Logan?
Some of you may not be interested in running but are curious as to how this would affect your travel plans flying out of Boston Logan.
"No, this does not close down any traffic as we’re doing it Sunday morning, when it’s light traffic to begin with," McGillivray said.
Why Runners Are Excited About This Unique 5K
Just think of the incredible views you will have while running this race, never mind how cool it would be to see these planes moving around the tarmac. I'll be sure to get you the registration link once everything is approved and up and running.
