Boston Is the Perfect Place for the Foo Fighters’ Return to the Stage

The announcement earlier today that the Foo Fighters will return to touring on May 26 by headlining the annual Boston Calling music festival was not a surprise, but while it was certainly celebratory, it was also a tad bittersweet.

The Foos were supposed to headline the festival last year, but the death of longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins in March put the band’s immediate future in doubt. However, after tribute concerts in London and Los Angeles in September, it became clear that Dave Grohl and company would soldier on sooner rather than later.

On the surface, the reason for the Foo Fighters headlining Boston Calling is simple: they’re making good after having to pull out last year. Yet if you look at it a little deeper, Boston is the perfect spot for the Foos to make a triumphant return, while also balancing the need to continue to pay tribute to their fallen friend and bandmate.

Boston knows a thing or two about perseverance, going all the way back to colonial times and extending all the way until the 21st century. It’s a city that made “Boston Strong” a national rallying cry almost a decade ago, and will make “Taylor Strong” a major focus of the Foo Fighters’ set on May 26.

Other acts announced for Boston Calling during Memorial Day weekend include the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Alanis Morissette, The Lumineers, Paramore and Queens of the Stone Age.
