Change a Child’s Life in Just 6 Hours a Month
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts is looking for more adults who want to make a real difference in a child’s life, and Community Engagement Specialist Kim Barrows says it is easier than most people think. She stopped by Fun 107 for the Southcoast Health Community Spotlight to explain how the Big Brothers Big Sisters program works.
What Is the Mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters?
The mission is simple. Every kid in the area who is looking for a mentor gets matched with one. Kim says that means each child would have someone they can talk to, play with and ask questions they might not ask a parent, teacher or guidance counselor.
Who Can Become a Big?
"Really, anybody," said Barrows. Volunteers must be at least 18, have access to public transportation and be willing to be committed and consistent. "Those two words are key," said Barrows. "The goal is to be a reliable adult, and having fun is part of it, whether that means pizza, coffee or a Red Sox game."
What Ages Do Kids Enroll?
Children can enroll between the ages of 7 and 12. Matches are based on compatibility rather than first come first served, so every match is a benefit to both the Big and the Little.
How Much Time Does Mentoring Take?
Most matches get together every other week, or twice a month, for about four to six hours a month. Bigs and Littles can stay in touch between outings, too.
Why Do Mentors Say It Is So Rewarding?
Kim says Bigs often do not realize how rewarding the experience is for them. Many matches turn into lifetime friendships that last 10, 20, or even 30 years, and sometimes it flips, with the Little looking after the Big when they start to get older and retire.
How Do You Sign Up?
To volunteer or enroll a child, visit emassbigs.org. Click the volunteer tab and hit apply, which Kim says takes about two minutes.
