That's the ballgame, folks.

Another season is in the books, and a new champion has been crowned in a milestone year.

Whaling City Youth Baseball League marked its 75th anniversary this season, and Amaral’s Linguica delivered a storybook ending by capturing the league championship.

A SouthCoast Baseball Tradition

Founded in 1948, Whaling City Youth Baseball has become one of the longest-running youth sports organizations in the area, offering kids from New Bedford and surrounding towns the chance to learn and compete. From tee-ball to the senior division, generations of players have built skills, friendships, and life lessons thanks to dedicated volunteers and supportive families.

"Coach Mo" and a Team Effort

Amaral’s Linguica, led by head coach Mo Bernardo – known to the kids and parents as “Coach Mo” – finished the season with a dominant 24-2 regular season record before powering through the playoffs with a 5-1 run to secure the championship.

“This being the 75th anniversary of Whaling City made winning the title that much more special,” Bernardo said. “We emphasized work ethic, teamwork, attitude, sportsmanship, and leaving it all on the field for each other. We never relied on just one player, everyone contributed in some way. We win together or we lose together. That was our motto.”

The victory also carried special meaning for the team’s longtime sponsor. Amaral’s Linguica has supported Whaling City baseball since 1976, when the late Mr. Rodrigues first brought the team into existence with the motto: “Anything for the kids.”

Community Behind the Champions

Bernardo credited parents, siblings, relatives, and fans for helping create the supportive environment that fueled the team’s success.

“At the end of the day, all credit goes to the players, our batboy, and our mascot,” he said. “They did the hard work.”
