Acushnet’s Hamlin Street Bridge Reopens After Long-Awaited Closure
At long last, the wait is over.
Hamlin Street Bridge, jokingly known by locals as “the Little Dig," officially reopened to traffic around noon on Tuesday, April 30, bringing a sigh of relief to residents who’ve been detouring around the closed crossing for what felt like forever.
The Acushnet Police Department made the big announcement with an excited post that read like a town-wide exhale.
MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT 🚨
At approximately 1 p.m.today, the Hamlin Street Bridge (aka the little dig) is open for vehicular traffic!!”
Police Sgt. Ashley was the first to cross the newly opened bridge, marking a symbolic end to the disruption that’s plagued drivers since its original closure back in January 2023.

Chief Tom Carreau of the Acushnet Police Department spoke with Fun 107 and shared more insight.
“It opened a little earlier in the day than expected,” he said. “All the 'Do Not Enter' and 'Road Closed' signs will be removed. Traffic can now flow freely again.”
According to Chief Carreau, there’s still a small drainage issue that will be addressed over the summer, but it’s nothing major and won’t lead to additional closures. Plans are also in place to repave Hamlin Street later this summer or fall.
“Everything from here on out is minor,” Carreau assured. “We don’t anticipate any more closures.”
So after detours, delays and plenty of grumbling from behind the wheel, Acushnet drivers can once again roll through the Little Dig and it feels good.
