Star Student-Athlete Set to Compete in National Track Meet
Yet another star-student from the New Bedford area!
Xavier Dixon, an NBHS grad and recent Stonehill College grad is set to compete in his first 2014 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Allendale, Michigan, tonight!
This competition will end Dixon’s extremely successful career in collegiate track.
He is entered in the 6:30pm race where he’ll compete in the 110-meter high hurdles with his personal best time at 14:26, making him the 13th fastest in the nation this season.
Dixon will need to finish in the top 8 if he is to continue competing this Saturday.
Not only is Dixon a star on the field, but he also shines at his academics. At NBHS, he was an all-around student athlete and role model to this fellow students. “At New Bedford High, we’ve had talented athletes that didn’t have that work ethic, but he had both. He’s a complete student-athlete,” says his New Bedford High track coach, Isaiah Houtman
Dixon competed last year in the NCAA Indoor Championships last March where he placed 11th in the 60-meter high hurdles.
Determined to make it to Saturday’s finals and reaching an All-American status, like he did in high school, Dixon is determined to break 14 seconds.
“I just need to run clean. I only have to beat myself. I feel like if i run my best, I think I can get in (the finals),” says Dixon.
We’re rooting for you back here in the South Coast, Xavier! Thanks for making us proud!
