Buy cookies, give blood, and get a free burrito. If that sounds like the deal of the century, then you'd be correct.

In an innovative collaboration to promote community health and support, a unique event is set to take place on Friday, March 29th, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Somerset Progressive Club Hall located at 139 Seaver Ave. It's a trifecta of goodwill, combining the noble act of donating blood, supporting local Girl Scouts, and rewarding donors with a complimentary burrito from Panchero’s Mexican restaurant.

This blood drive is organized by Girl Scouts Troop 1096, who, after a visit to the Providence Blood Donor Center, were deeply moved to raise awareness about blood donation. They recognized the critical need, particularly among the younger demographic, as statistics revealed a concerning 50% decline in blood donations nationwide among individuals aged 16-25.

Caitlin Gimaldi-Flick, Marketing and Communications Manager for the Rhode Island Blood Center, expressed admiration toward Troop 1096.

"It’s great these girls are proactively getting involved before they are eligible to donate," she said, "The younger generation doesn’t exactly understand the importance of it. Whether you think about it now or down the line, you’re going to know someone who needs blood, including yourself."

The Rhode Island Blood Center plays a pivotal role in serving 60 hospitals across the MA and RI region, extending its reach to areas like Cape Cod and Fall River. Highlighting the significance of these blood drives, Gimaldi-Flick emphasized that each donation has the potential to save up to three lives.

Little does the general public know, the process of blood donation is relatively quick, with the actual donation taking less than 15 minutes. However, the longest parts involve completing a questionnaire and allowing time for post-donation relaxation and refreshments to ensure donors' well-being.

Girl Scouts Troop 1096 will also be selling their famous cookies, furthering their mission while advocating for blood donation. And as a token of appreciation, donors will receive a free burrito from Panchero’s Mexican restaurant. It's a win-win situation no matter how you look at it.

For those interested in participating, walk-ins are welcomed.
