New Bedford Robbery Suspect Found in Underwear & Holding Crack Pipe

Police arrest a suspect in connection with an armed robbery Sunday night in the area of Coffin Avenue and Acushnet Avenue.

The victim said he was walking down the street when he was confronted by a man who showed a handgun and demanded money. The robber made off with the victim's cash, wallet, credit cards and cell phone.

Police tracked down the suspect to a 3rd floor apartment on Phillips Avenue and found 20-year-old Kelvin Ortiz hiding in a shower, stripped down to his underwear and socks and holding a crack pipe.

Det. Capt. Steven Vicente says the handgun was found on the porch. It turned out to be a starter pistol.

Ortiz faces an armed robbery charge in New Bedford District Court.
