NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — New Bedford’s annual Independence Day fireworks have been postponed due to expected inclement weather.

The fireworks, originally scheduled for tonight at 9 p.m., will instead be held on Wednesday, July 5 at 9 p.m.

The move was necessary due to tonight’s forecast of heavy rain, thunderstorms and fog, according to a release from the City of New Bedford.

New Bedford’s Independence Day fireworks display will be staged from a barge located off of State Pier in New Bedford Harbor Wednesday night. Lower Union Street (east of Water Street) will be closed to vehicle traffic and will be the best spot in Downtown New Bedford to view the fireworks display, the City said.

The Independence Day fireworks in New Bedford were also postponed due to inclement weather back in 2021. This past New Year’s Eve, a diesel spill in New Bedford Harbor postponed those fireworks a day.
