Saturday morning’s death of an inmate of the Bristol County House of Corrections is now being investigated as a suicide, according to Gregg Miliote, spokesman for the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.

The inmate, identified as 47-year-old Michael Fay, formerly of Fall River, was rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital with an unspecified medical emergency. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Miliote says it was an apparent suicide by hanging.

Ray previously spent nine years in state prison for a series of armed robberies from November 2003 to July 2004 in Fall River. He was arrested again in September 2015 after another string of robberies in Fall River, which he told police was to get money to pay drug debts.

It is unknown if that was the reason why he was currently incarcerated.

The investigation by the district attorney’s office into Ray’s death remains ongoing.

It’s the second suicide in a Bristol County jail this year, as 22-year-old Tyler Holdsworth of Dartmouth also hanged himself in his cell at the Ash Street Jail in March.
