Rhode Island drivers will no longer being smiling in their drivers' license photos...and it's apparently for their safety.

Drivers in RI are no longer allowed to smile at the DMV (like anyone does anyway!) because of new facial recognition software.

The RI Division of Motor Vehicles has new cameras and facial recognition software that is supposed to prevent identity theft, but smiling can affect the results.

They say your eyes, cheekbones even eyebrows get distorted by smiling, so Rhode Island drivers have to hold their grins in at photo time.

RI becomes the latest of several states that are asking drivers to stop smiling in license pictures.

They also say if you get a drastic haircut or change your facial hair you may want to get a new license photo so there is no question about your identity if your ID is being looked at by authorities.
