With the exception of one season, it has been nearly 40 years since someone not named Brogioli was the head coach of the Wareham Vikings.  Seventeen years and 313 wins later, Kevin Brogioli has announced that he is stepping down as the Wareham varsity boys basketball coach.

Brogioli told Fun 107 this morning that his responsibilities as the principal at Old Rochester Regional Junior High School are demanding, and "I always said if I couldn't do both at a level that I need to do them at...that I'd have to give something up."  The coach says that the thought of resigning came to him last winter when both jobs took a toll on the 53-year-old.

For two decades, Brogioli has been the face of Wareham Viking basketball and achieved many feats, such as a state championship in 2010. Under Brogioli, Wareham won three sectional titles and reached the finals six times. During that time, the Vikings won 11 South Coast Conference titles, including an eight year title streak which ended this past season. In 17 seasons, Brogioli led the Vikings to the postseason 16 times.

Brogioli admits that his decision to step down was not easy.

Since he was a young boy, Brogioli watched his father, Jim Brogioli, coach the Wareham boys’ basketball team. From 1976-1979, Kevin played for his father.

From 1971-1997, Kevin’s father, Jim, racked up 404 wins with the program.  This father and son combination has been the only father and son combo to achieve over 300 wins at the same school in Massachusetts high school basketball history.

Next season will be a different scenario, as it will be nearly 40 years since a Brogioli has not coached basketball at Wareham High School.
