Mrs. Julie Ferreira is a 5th Grade Teacher at William H. Taylor Elementary School in New Bedford, and thanks to her unwavering commitment to her students, she is October's Teacher of the Month.

Here is what a parent of one of her students had to say about her:

Mrs. Ferreira is a dynamic educator. She makes learning fun, but also holds her students accountable for their education. She keeps parents involved and is open to communication. I appreciate that she is clear about her expectations, but also gives shoutouts and celebrates students' successes.

I think she deserves to be Fun 107's teacher of the month because she recently started an after-school entrepreneur club for her 5th graders. Students created a business plan and secured seed funding from the school's PTO after they presented a PowerPoint, showing their intentions. These 10 and 11-year-olds stood in front of a group of adults and convincingly requested money to start a school store. At Mrs. Ferreira's guidance, they developed the list of supplies they would need when items would be for sale, and their plan for repaying the PTO.

In a system so dictated by MCAS, it's amazing to see a teacher step outside of the box to teach kids useful skills that won't be found on a standardized test. She deserves this recognition. I know there are a lot of great teachers in the area!
