Is there any better way to start your day than with a slice of Portuguese sweet bread, toasted or grilled, with butter or peanut butter?

Outside of your Vavo, what local bakery makes the best sweet bread? That's what Viva Fall River and New Bedford Food Tours hope to find out.

They're conducting a fun competition called South Coast Snackdown to determine which local bakery makes the best sweet bread in the region.

Patti Rego, Executive Director of Viva Fall River, joined Townsquare Sunday to discuss the competition and how you can get involved.

There are 22 bakeries involved in the competition: 13 in Fall River, eight in New Bedford and one in Swansea.

Rego said the contest is not that difficult; visit bakeries, eat sweet bread and vote.

"We would love people to visit all the bakeries, but that's not very likely," Rego said. "If you have a favorite, go to nbfoodtours.com/snackdown to vote. That page has a complete list of all participating bakeries."

You can vote once per day. The deadline for voting is Thursday, February 29 at 11:59 p.m. The winning bakery will be announced by mid-March.

Rego said there has been a wonderful response to the sweet bread contest, with double the votes so far compared to last year's contest on who makes the best Portuguese custard (nata).

Again, visit nbfoodtours.com/snackdown to cast your vote.

Townsquare Sunday is a community affairs program that airs Sundays on WBSM.

The program highlights individuals and organizations who are seeking to make the SouthCoast a better place to live and work.
