New Bedford Police have arrested a man they say stabbed another male behind Central Plaza in the North End Monday afternoon.

Detective Captain Steven Vicente says 43-year-old Arthur Ostiguy was arrested after he was seen walking in the area of Shawmut Avenue and Hathaway Road this afternoon. Ostiguy was identified from surveillance video and witness statements that placed him at the scene, committing the stabbing.

Both Ostiguy and the 50-year-old male victim are homeless. A motive for the stabbing has not been established at this time.

Ostiguy faces arraignment in New Bedford District Court Wednesday morning, and is charged with assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

The victim remains hospitalized in serious condition.

The investigation is ongoing.
