NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — A New Bedford man was shot and killed in the area of County Street on Thursday evening.

According to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, New Bedford Police received a ShotSpotter notification and several 911 calls at 11:04 p.m. Thursday reporting multiple shots being fired in the area of 123 County Street and a male victim near the area of 116 County Street.

First responders arrived on the scene and found evidence of the shooting but no victim was found.

According to the D.A.’s Office, “a short time later, a private vehicle arrived at St. Luke's Hospital with the victim inside.”

The victim was identified by police as Amareuito Fernandes, 27, of New Bedford.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital at 11:33 p.m.

According to the D.A.’s Office, New Bedford Police, Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the D.A.’s Office and Homicide Unit Prosecutors are conducting an ongoing investigation.

No further information is being released at this time.
