NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — Authorities are investigating a homicide after a 20-year-old man was apparently shot this morning in New Bedford’s Near North End.

According to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, New Bedford Police received a 911 call at about 12:11 a.m. today regarding shots fired in the area of Tallman Street and North Front Street.

Officers reported they were approached by witnesses who reported “hearing loud bangs that sounded like gunshots,” according to the D.A.’s Office. Officers then searched the area and found the victim inside his vehicle on Belleville Avenue.

The D.A.’s Office said it appears that the victim – identified as Lorenzo Gomes, 20, of New Bedford – attempted to drive to the hospital before losing consciousness in his vehicle. He was taken by EMS to St. Luke’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The homicide remains under investigation by New Bedford Police and Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the District Attorney’s Office.

No further information is being released at this time.
