NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — A man was arrested Monday in New Bedford's North End for alleged illegal gun possession.

New Bedford Police received a call around 10 a.m. on March 25 regarding a man with a pistol walking on County Street in the area of Coggeshall Street.

An officer shortly located a man who matched the description provided. A police search was conducted, and police said they discovered the suspect, identified as Jonatas Mendes, 40, was carrying a gun in his front waistband.

Police said Mendes was not licensed to possess the gun, which was a .38-caliber revolver.

He was taken into custody and charged with carrying a loaded firearm without a license.
