An emotionally charged issue last night for the New Bedford City Council.  The approved a new measure to limit roadside shrines to 14 days.  Additionally, votive candles and liquor bottles will no longer be allowed to be a part of the shrines.

According to the SouthCoastToday.com, the change was proposed after a complaint was received about a shrine that was put up after a shooting death early last year.  The shrine contains a bottle of Hennessey, and some people in the community were concerned that it makes their neighborhood look dangerous.

The city council stressed that the vote doesn't ban shrines in New Bedford, but simply allows for a two week grieving period before shrines are cleared.
