UPDATE (3:58 p.m.): New Bedford Schools spokesman Arthur Motta tells WBSM News Gomes School is NOT on lockdown, despite rumors going around on social media. Motta says security has just been "tightened" following the shooting incident this afternoon on South First and Blackmer Streets.

NEW BEDFORD — New Bedford Police detectives are actively investigating a shooting that occurred today at 2:30 p.m. at South First and Blackmer Street

An 18-year-old New Bedford man was shot and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

This investigation remains extremely active. Detectives have three people of interest detained. No further details will be released at this time.
