A New Bedford man is charged with setting fire to a vehicle.

New Bedford Police say that at around 1:52 p.m. Monday they received a call about a vehicle with flames and heavy smoke coming from the hood near 11 Holly St.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and the vehicle was towed from the scene.

The vehicle's owner told police he parked the vehicle and went into the home.

He said he returned to find smoke coming from under the vehicle's hood.

Surveillance videos saw the supect, 36-year-old Alejandro Pineda, with a blue container in his hand.

He was then observed placing something under the hood and pouring something from the container into the engine.

A flame was also seen emerging from under the engine compartment.

Police say the blue container smelled of gasoline after it was shown to them by a family member.
