Gap has released a statement saying that it will be closing 175 stores in North America and has cut approximately 250 jobs at its headquarters due to these losses.

The infamous clothing store released a statement Monday disclosing that 140 Gap stores will be shut down as soon as Jan. 31, including some European locations as well.

The company, notorious for their jeans and khakis, is allegedly trying to strengthen their brand after suffering in the recent years when it comes to keeping up with design trends.

Gap Inc., which owns many clothing stores, including Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic, hopes to overhaul its fashions and improve their appeal.

During the transition the company said that Gap Factory or Gap Outlet locations will not be affected.

Although it seems like a setback, there are 963 Gap stores in North America alone and the company has its other brands which have been doing much better than Gap Stores.

Gap Global President Jeff Kirwan told The Associated Press that the company will apply lessons it's learned from its Old Navy brand to Gap.
