A lot of work goes into keeping up Dartmouth Orchards but the story here is about someone putting in even more work behind the scenes to get well.

Brian Medeiros, the owner of Dartmouth Orchards on Old Westport Road in Dartmouth, is the third generation in his family to maintain and harvest here, where quality products such as fresh apples and cider are available for purchase.

This last harvest was especially challenging.

No, not due to climate change, or lack of precipitation, but because while still managing the business, Medeiros was also battling throat cancer.

Word spread on Facebook this week in a post that generated more than 100 shares and hundreds of comments from well-wishers.

Medeiros recently completed treatment and is awaiting results of his last scan. He declined to be interviewed but is aware of the groundswell of support.

Many in the Dartmouth community have taken notice that although Medeiros appears frail, he has been working hard to harvest for his many loyal customers.

Medeiros said guests are welcome to the orchard any time and that he'll do his best to say hello and share his story.

Here is a photo posted to the Dartmouth Orchards Facebook page of Brian celebrating a birthday a few years back.

Hopefully, he has many more happy birthdays ahead of him.

Dartmouth — and fall — just wouldn't be the same without Dartmouth Orchards.
