The secrets to avoiding that dreaded Thanksgiving weekend traffic.

In addition to being one of the busiest shopping weekend of the year, Thanksgiving weekend has also caused some of the worst traffic jams in New England history.

According to Fox News, in 2014, AAA estimated that about 90% of Thanksgiving travelers would drive to their Thanksgiving celebrations, with about 46 million people driving 50 miles or more from home.

One common belief is that leaving early will help yo beat the traffic, but according to the navigation app, Waze, they say that starting early isn’t really better, unless you’re going to leave a whole week early.

This year Waze reports that traffic will start Tuesday, Nov. 24 at around 1 p.m. as people begin hitting the road, with the heaviest traffic occurring from 4–8 p.m.  The traffic stays pretty bad throughout Wednesday beginning at 11 a.m. and lasting through the day and into the evening.

So, what’s the best time to travel?  Waze reports that early morning Thanksgiving Day is ideal...but that traffic begins heating up again in the afternoon just before Thanksgiving dinners are being served.  Avoid noon to 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving.
