A volcano on the Cape Verdean island of Fogo erupted on Sunday, forcing residents to evacuate.According to the Cape Cod Times, Prime Minister Jose Maria das Neves said on the government website the evacuation began Sunday morning, when the eruption began.

The former Portuguese colonies sit just off the west coast of Africa, and with so many Cape Verde connections here in Southeastern Massachusetts, we can all be thankful that there have been no reported injuries.

The Pico do Fogo volcano eruption, which last occurred in 1995, wasn't a surprise to the island people. Geological services showed that the volcano had become increasingly active the past few weeks.

There are no further details at this time.
