On Monday Taunton said goodbye to the local landmark Benjamin's.

According to Tauntongazette, the first owner had tried to sell Benjamin's. Then, the bank that foreclosed the restaurant tried to sell it too.

The president and CEO of Mechanics Cooperative Bank, Joe Baptista, said Benjamin's was demolished once it became clear that there was no ability for re-use. Last month the City Council scrapped the idea to covert the restaurant into apartments.

Residents watched the landmark being torn down on Monday morning. A local woman, Ann Levesque said that she had her wedding reception at Benjamin's in 1995. She became emotional as she watched saying that there is long history and memories from there.

Benjamin's was torn down between 8:30 a.m. until 10 a.m.on Monday.   In a few days the debris should be cleared from the site.  No word on future plans for the site as of right now but we'll keep our eyes on it!
