Police are attempting to curb dangerous panhandling

New Bedford Police are getting tough on panhandlers who obstruct traffic and approach motorists asking for money at local intersections and roadways. Police said what they are doing is endangering themselves and motorists — and their actions are also illegal.

"It's illegal on state highways and city streets to approach vehicles," said Police Chief David A. Provencher. "Beyond that it's a public safety hazard "

"You can't go out into the roadway. It's not safe — not safe for the operator and not safe for them," Police plan to continue the enforcement action, according to New Bedford Police Chief Provencher. Officers will approach panhandlers when they see them, advise them they are violating the law and will be subject to court action if they continue.
