NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — New Bedford Police were investigating a stabbing in the city’s North End and ended up taking an illegal gun off the street at the same time.

According to police, North End patrol units responded to the area of Collette Street and Ashley Boulevard on Tuesday, November 7 at about 9 p.m. for a report of a man who had been stabbed.

Police arrived on the scene and found the victim suffering from injuries that were not life-threatening. He was transported to the hospital and is expected to recover; however, police said he was not forthcoming with information that could help with the investigation.

Police said that while they were investigating the stabbing, Officers Eric Boulay and Jack Cordeiro detained a man who was attempting to leave the scene, identified as Victor Abraham Rodriguez Ortiz, 22, of New Bedford.

Ortiz was allegedly found in possession of a loaded Glock handgun, and was placed into custody. He faces charges of carrying a loaded firearm without a license.

Police said the investigation into the stabbing is ongoing.
